What is NLP –?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP. The name comes from:-
N - Neurology – The mind and how we think
L – Linguistics – How we use language and how it effects us.
P – Programming – Hew we sequence our actions to achieve our goals.
In other words, NLP is how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve
NLP was developed in the early 1970’s by John Grinder, a world renowned linguist and Richard Bandler, a mathematician, therapist and computer expert. They wanted to know why certain therapists achieved spectacular results while others appeared to use the same techniques but were much less successful. They studied the work of experts in their fields, Milton Erickson (hypnotherapy) and Virginia Satir (family therapist).
The results were the basis for what they went on to call NLP
When using NLP in a therapeutic setting NLP provides a framework for understanding, diagnosing and gathering information about problems a client may have, and once we understand the structure of a problem and how it works, NLP gives us tools to change it, to healthier, safer, more satisfying options. These tools are adapted depending on the person and the reason they are seeking help. Some examples for the use of NLP techniques are to help people to cure phobias, panic attacks, confidence building, weight loss, over coming nerves, maximising performance. NLP and Hypnotherapy work quicker than conventional counselling methods, averaging from 1 to 6 sessions depending on the reason for therapy.
Since NLP started some exponents have become household names including; Anthony Robbins (personal development), Derren Brown (entertainment) and Paul McKenna (hypnotherapy).
NLP is still expanding and is also used successfully in sales, business, education, the arts, sport and many other vocations
